Las Vegas sits in the middle of one of the most geologically extraordinary regions on earth. Red rock, slot canyons, river gorges, pine forests, desert lakes, and the Grand Canyon are all within a few hours in any direction. After 24 years here, I’ve done every drive on this list multiple times. Some are famous. Some are genuinely unknown outside of locals. All of them are worth the drive.
The thing most people don’t realize about Las Vegas is what surrounds it. Do at least one of these drives — you’ll come back understanding why people who move here for a year end up staying for decades.
Before You Go
A few things apply to almost every trip on this list. Gas up before you leave the city — prices outside Las Vegas are higher and stations are sparse. Bring more water than you think you need — the desert is unforgiving and most of these destinations have limited or no services. Check the weather at your actual destination, not Las Vegas — what’s 75°F in the valley can be 45°F at elevation or 110°F in a low desert canyon on the same day. And leave early, before 8am when possible — you beat the crowds, get the best light, and have buffer time if anything takes longer than planned.
Under 1 Hour Away
Valley of Fire State Park
Nevada’s oldest state park and one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Southwest. Red sandstone formations, ancient petroglyphs, slot canyons. The White Domes Loop is one of the best short hikes in Nevada. Do not go in summer midday — October through April is ideal. This is the first place I send anyone who wants to see what Nevada actually looks like beyond the Strip.

Thirty-five miles from the Strip and nearly 12,000 feet up — pine trees, hiking trails, a ski resort in winter, temperatures 20–30 degrees cooler than the valley floor. This is where Las Vegas residents escape when summer makes the city feel unlivable. Mary Jane Falls is the classic hike.

The best-kept secret in the Las Vegas day trip rotation. Cold clear Colorado River water in a dramatic canyon, world-class trout fishing, and access to Emerald Cave — where sunlight turns the water an impossible shade of green. Most visitors to Las Vegas have never heard of this place. That’s exactly why it should be on your list.

1–2 Hours Away
Hoover Dam
One of the greatest engineering achievements of the 20th century, still generating power for millions across the Southwest. The scale of it in person is something photos don’t capture. The drive along the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge gives you the best aerial view. Allow 2–3 hours including the visitor center. Pairs naturally with Willow Beach or Boulder City.

The only city in Nevada where gambling is prohibited — which gives it a character unlike anywhere else in the state. Genuine Main Street feel, historic architecture from the Hoover Dam construction era, excellent access to Lake Mead and the Colorado River. Worth a half day on its own or as a base for Hoover Dam and Willow Beach.
2–2.5 Hours Away
Death Valley National Park
The lowest, hottest, driest place in North America — and one of the most alien landscapes on earth. Badwater Basin, Zabriskie Point, Dante’s View. Only visit October through March — summer temperatures are genuinely dangerous. In cooler months it’s surprisingly beautiful and uncrowded. Almost no tourists go, which is exactly the point.

One of the most visited national parks in America and for good reason — the canyon is extraordinary. Angels Landing and The Narrows are the famous hikes. The shuttle system inside the park is required for most of the main canyon. Go on a weekday if at all possible — weekend crowds have gotten intense.
