Most people who come to Las Vegas never know this place exists. That’s fine by us.
Lake Las Vegas is a 320-acre man-made lake tucked into the Henderson hills, about 30 minutes from the Strip. It has a Mediterranean-style village, two hotels, restaurants on the water, and enough quiet that you forget what city you’re in. My family has been coming out here for nearly 20 years — rotating between the two hotels, using it as our staycation spot every other summer, sometimes just escaping out here when family visits and we want to show them Vegas without doing the Strip.
On the Strip, you can feel the looks when you walk in with kids. At Lake Las Vegas, nobody cares. It’s a family atmosphere — always has been.
That matters more than people realize. Las Vegas as a city is not exactly kid-welcoming. Casino floors, adults-only pools, the general energy of the Boulevard — you spend half your time feeling like your children are inconveniencing someone. Lake Las Vegas never felt that way. When my kids were young, it was the place we could actually relax together without any of that.
It’s that kind of place. Low-key, genuinely pretty, and completely off the radar for most tourists. The TikTok above hit 70K views because nobody had seen it — which tells you everything about how underrated it is.
The Two Hotels — What You’re Actually Choosing Between
There are two properties at Lake Las Vegas and they give you completely different experiences. I’ve stayed at both.
The Westin Lake Las Vegas
This is where we stayed for years before switching it up. The pool is the reason — it sits right on the lake with views that don’t look real. They do kayak rentals on the water and movie nights outside. If you want a genuine resort feel without going to a Strip property, this is it.
Hilton Lake Las Vegas
We stayed here more recently and it changed how I think about the area. You walk right out into Montelago Village — the restaurants, the promenade, everything on the water. More social, more walkable, slightly less resort-y. Depends on what you’re here for.
Local tip: Weekends fill up fast, especially in spring and fall when the weather is perfect. If you’re coming from out of town specifically for this, don’t wait to book. Summer is hot but the pool makes it work — and rates are lower.
Where to Eat in Montelago Village
The village is small — a loop of restaurants and shops right on the water. You’re not coming here for variety, you’re coming here for the setting. Two places worth knowing:
Luna Rossa
Italian, right on the lake. Family-owned, been there since 2000, and the kind of place that doesn’t need to advertise because people just keep coming back. The water views at dinner are legitimately good. This is where we ate when we stayed at the Hilton — we walked over and didn’t leave for two hours. Get the pasta, sit outside if you can.
Mrs. Coco
The pink café. It’s at 20 Via Bel Canto, right behind the Hilton, and you’ll find it by the color alone. Known for designer cappuccinos, fruity waffles, and something called a candy cloud champagne. It’s Instagrammable but the coffee is actually good — not just a photo op. Good for a slow morning before the heat sets in.
What to Do at Lake Las Vegas
This isn’t a theme park. That’s the point. Here’s how we actually spend time out here:
Kayak on the lake
Rentals are available through the Westin. Early morning is the best time — the water is flat, the light is good, and the hills around the lake look completely different from out on the water than they do from shore.
Walk the Montelago Village loop
It takes maybe 20 minutes at a relaxed pace. Grab something at Mrs. Coco, walk along the waterfront, end up at Luna Rossa for lunch. That’s a morning right there.
Movie night at the Westin
They do outdoor screenings on the water. It’s the kind of thing that sounds corny until you’re actually sitting there watching a movie outside with the lake behind you and it’s 75 degrees. We’ve done it multiple times.
Just be somewhere quiet
I know that sounds like nothing. But if you live here and you’ve had a week of traffic and noise and Strip energy — Lake Las Vegas is the reset. You don’t have to do anything. That’s the whole point.
Getting there: About 30 minutes from the Strip via I-515 South to Lake Las Vegas Parkway. Parking is free at both hotels for guests. If you’re day-tripping, street parking in the village works and there’s no charge.
The Anti-Strip Option for Visitors
If someone visits you in Las Vegas and you’ve already done the Strip three times, Lake Las Vegas is the answer. It’s distinctly Nevada — the desert hills, the lake, the warmth — but it doesn’t feel like anything on the Boulevard. It feels like a different city.
When my mom came out, we didn’t even discuss the Strip. We just drove out here, had dinner at Luna Rossa, sat on the water, and that was the trip. She loved it more than any casino we’ve ever taken her to.
That’s what 24 years of living here gets you. You stop performing Las Vegas for people and start just showing them the places you actually go.
